Ian Wright has called for Kobbie Mainoo to be selected in the next England squad, with Gary Lineker also on board the Manchester United midfielder’s bandwagon.

The 18-year-old is enjoying a superb breakout season for the Red Devils, becoming a fixture in the middle of their midfield.

While a lot of their more established, experienced and well-paid players have struggled for consistency this campaign, the teenager has not.

Mainoo made his first Premier League start on 26 November in a win at Everton and has now made 11 starts in the top flight, most recently at Luton Town on Sunday.

It was during the contest at Kenilworth Road that Wright and Lineker gave their backing to the youngster, saying he is already deserving of a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Wright posted on X: ‘Kobbie Mainoo has to be in the next England squad. Such maturity in chaotic conditions that we’ve not seen from a England player in a long time. Impressed every time I watch him.’

Lineker replied: ‘Agreed @IanWright0. What a fabulous young player.’

There could be a place in the England midfield up for grabs at this summer’s European Championships, with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice nailing down two of the three positions.

However, Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson have long been in contention to take the third spot, but there are significant doubts over both men.

Henderson’s failed move to Saudi Arabia sees him trying to rebuild his career at Ajax, while Phillips is struggling to make an impact on loan from Manchester City at West Ham.

In fact, the former Leeds man is having a bit of a nightmare with the Hammers, making notable errors and being sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

As Mainoo continues to impress, calls for him to be included in the Three Lions squad will grow, ahead of friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March.
