Bayern Munich is a more ‘rewarding’ choice than Liverpool for Xabi Alonso as the clubs fight to secure his services as manager, says legendary figure in German football Lothar Matthaus.

Alonso has become incredibly desirable for top teams in Europe thanks to his exploits as manager of Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spaniard’s side are eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and after a recent 3-0 win over Bayern Munich they look very strong favourites to lift the title.

That defeat, along with recent losses to Lazio and Bochum have piled the pressure on Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel and the club announced on Wednesday that he will be leaving at the end of the season.

Also leaving his post at the end of the campaign is Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and both the Merseyside and Bavarian teams want Alonso.

The classy midfielder played for both clubs over his brilliant career and both will be very hopeful they can tempt him into taking the helm.

Matthaus reckons taking over from the struggling Tuchel at Bayern is a more appealing prospect than trying to follow the hugely popular reign of Klopp at Anfield.

‘It’s normal that you have to be interested in Xabi Alonso,’ the Bayern and Germany legend told Bild. ‘If they didn’t take care of him, they would make the next mistake.

‘The task in Munich would be more rewarding than that in Liverpool to become the successor to the revered Jurgen Klopp.’

Matthaus also suggested that the matter could become even more complicated as Bayern may not wait until the end of the season to get rid of Tuchel.

On their choice to ditch the former Chelsea boss in the summer, the 62-year-old said: ‘It’s a sensible decision for both of them. This was probably the most sensible conversation that has ever taken place between the two sides.

‘There are no more excuses. Both sides can live with the decision and no one loses face. An earlier or premature separation is not ruled out by the current decision.

‘One hopes for a positive effect. If that doesn’t happen, you can always separate immediately. The team is now responsible.’
