Bayern Munich have made Xabi Alonso their No.1 target to replace Thomas Tuchel as their next manager.

Following a disastrous run of form the German giants confirmed the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss will stand down at the end of the current campaign.

Tuchel joined Bayern midway through last season after the shock sacking of Julian Nagelsmann and helped the club retain the Bundesliga title by the skin of their teeth.

Bolstered by the summer arrival of Harry Kane, Tuchel was expected to build a team capable of dominating the domestic scene and make a strong challenge for Champions League glory.

After a bright start to the campaign, cracks have begun to emerge and Bayern now trail Bayer Leverkusen, reborn under the management of Alonso, by eight points in the race for the title.

A narrow defeat against Lazio in the away leg of their last 16 Champions League tie means Bayern’s European hopes now hang by a thread, which has led to speculation reaching boiling over Tuchel’s future.

In an effort to clarify the situation, Bayern have now confirmed the 50-year-old will vacate his post in the summer with chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen saying: ‘In an open, good conversation we came to the decision to mutually end our collaboration in the summer.

‘Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga.

‘I also explicitly hold the team responsible. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio, we will advance to the quarter-finals in the second leg in our sold-out Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.’

Tuchel, himself, added: ‘We have agreed that we will end our collaboration after the end of this season. Until then, my coaching staff and I will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success.’

According to Sky Germany, Bayern are already understood to have made contact with Alonso who played for the club for three years at the end of his career.

The Spaniard, however, has informed Bayern he has little intention of considering his own future at present and his entire focus remains on steering Leverkusen towards an unlikely title triumph.

Bayern will face stiff competition from Liverpool who are also keen on appointing Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s successor following his own shock decision to stand down after nine trophy-laden years at Anfield.

Klopp will play no part in the recruitment process but last week appeared to endorse Alonso’s credentials by hailing him as one of the most exciting coaching talents in world football at present.

‘Xabi is doing an incredible job,’ Klopp said on Friday ahead of Liverpool’s game at Brentford.

‘If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso, I would have gone ‘Oh my God!’

‘Always what I said, the dinosaurs if you want, Ancelotti (Carlo), Mourinho (Jose), Guardiola (Pep), maybe me, we will not do it okay, maybe Mourinho – but all the rest will not do it for the next 20 years.

‘The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department.

‘Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional.’
