United beat League Two side Newport County 4-2 to advance to the fifth-round of the Cup, thanks to goals from Fernandes, Mainoo, Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.
It was not as easy as the scoreline suggests however, with Newport rallying from 2-0 down after 13 minutes to get the score level just after the break.
Post-match Erik ten Hag was clearly frustrated with how the match played out, while captain Fernandes accused his teammates of being greedy and trying to get a goal from themselves rather than help the side kill the game off.
His anger was perhaps aimed toward Alejandro Garnacho who opted to go for glory rather than play an easy pass to Fernandes and Hojlund who surely would have scored to make it 3-0 after just 19 minutes.
While many would surely agree with the Portugal international’s assessment, Sutton took issue with the way 29-year-old was so open about his criticisms.
‘That’s pretty remarkable. The captain of Manchester United coming out publicly and just telling everybody that it’s everyone for themselves,’ the former Blues striker said on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast.
‘That’s something which he should be saying within the confines of the dressing room. He’s just letting everybody know that things aren’t right.’
Very few United players are having a good season, and with Sir Jim Ratcliffe now calling the shots, some are hoping that those who are underperforming will be kicked oy quickly and replaced.
But Sutton is wary that that will not be an easy process and cannot be rushed, adding: ‘They’re going to have an awful lot of players to replace before long.
‘I know we don’t know what will happen with [Marcus] Rashford but [Jadon] Sancho isn’t coming back anytime soon. Mason Greenwood isn’t coming back. Jonny Evans is on a short contract.
‘How long is Casemiro going to stick around? How long is Christian Eriksen going to stick around? What about Raphael Varane?
‘All those players – even if only half of them go – they’ve got to be replaced. They may not all be good enough or they may not be performing, but they are bodies in the squad. They are going to need to be replaced.’
