Chelsea flop Saul Niguez admits he feels ‘s****y’ despite his Atletico Madrid team booking their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Spanish midfielder was on loan at Chelsea in the 2021-22 season and the Blues had the option to turn it into a permanent deal but decided to bin him off.

Saul instead returned to Atletico and on Wednesday he featured in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Inter Milan.

The 29-year-old came off the bench as the match eventually went to penalties at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Saul failed to convert his spot kick in the shootout – the only Atletico player to do so – but it didn’t matter as his side came out on top to reach the last eight.

But Saul was left frustrated with his own performance after the game and opened up about his poor form on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘Honestly, it is difficult for me to write right now, but just as I write in good times, I must do so in bad times,’ Saul posted. ‘It’s a s****y moment for me on a sporting level, and I’m aware.

‘I accept all the criticism and not only because of today’s penalty but because of how I am right now.

‘I don’t know exactly what it is, but the only thing they have taught me is to keep working through thick and thin, until I manage to change the situation.

‘Thank you for being there through thick and thin.’
