Chelsea admit Christopher Nkunku is still ‘undergoing assessment’ for a hip injury that kept him out of the side’s FA Cup win against Preston North End.

The Frenchman was left out of the squad that beat Preston 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, putting the Blues into the hat for the fourth round draw.

Nkunku returned to action in December after missing the first four months of the season with a knee injury.

Chelsea’s squad has been depleted by injury this season and Nkunku’s absence has been particularly costly given the club’s lack of firepower.

The Blues play Middlesbrough in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, before taking on rivals Fulham at the weekend.

Following the win against Preston, Mauricio Pochettino intimated that Nkunku could return this week.

‘He wasn’t involved because he suffered after training a problem in his hip,’ Pochettino said.

‘We need to see if he can be ready for the next few games.’

However, Chelsea’s website have today updated supporters on Nkunku’s condition and they say they are yet to determine the extent of the problem.

‘Christopher Nkunku [is still] undergoing medical assessment,’ a statement on Chelsea’s injury problems read.

It’s likely the Frenchman will miss the visit of Michael Carrick’s side, in a further blow to the Blues.
