Chiefs can clip Ravens’ wings to reach Super Bowl LVIII

It’s not often that Taylor Swift is upstaged but the Cruel Summer singer was demoted to a supporting role during wild celebrations as the Kansas City Chiefs won an NFL play-off thriller in ice-cold Buffalo.

Patrick Mahomes had just thrown a touchdown to the superstar’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and the cameras zeroed in on the executive box where she was enjoying the rollercoaster encounter.

But her joyous moment was hijacked by a shirtless Jason Kelce, the Philadelphia Eagles center and Travis’ brother, as he beat his chest and chugged a beer before leaping into the crowd.

It was the NFL equivalent of King Kong on top of the Empire State Building and stay tuned for similar fun and games in Baltimore on Sunday when the Chiefs reach their third Super Bowl in five years.

The defending champions were not at their best for large swathes of the regular season but are finding their form when it matters most and a lot of the credit has to go to a defense brilliantly organised by Steve Spagnuolo, who once ended Tom Brady’s hopes of an unbeaten season with the New England Patriots as the New York Giants lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Spags found ways to stop Buffalo passer Josh Allen as a tense battle went to the wire, with the Chiefs emerging as 27-24 victors – now he’ll devise a similar plan to foil an equally mobile quarterback in the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson and help send Kansas City to a big away win at 17/10 with William Hill.

San Francisco were made to work for their narrow 24-21 triumph over the Green Bay Packers but their strength in depth on both sides of the pigskin should mean a nightmare end to the Detroit Lions’ Cinderella story and the 49ers can prevail in the NFC Championship game by covering the 6.5 points spread at 23/4 with bet365.

We’re sitting pretty after three of our four bets on last weekend’s games turned up trumps as we’re also holding ante-post vouchers on three of the four teams still in the Super Bowl hunt.

Kansas City were our 6/1 each-way ante-post selection to win the Super Bowl with the 49ers chalked up e/w to be their opponents in the Las Vegas showdown at 10/1.  We then had a saver on Baltimore at 6/1 as Kansas wobbled before Christmas so we’re looking at a profitable outcome.

To avoid being upset if the Lions win in Vegas, though, have a small interest in Detroit to emerge as champions at 8/1 with Betway – there’s no need to lose your shirt in the cold weather.

• Jannik Sinner joined an elite list of players to reach the Australian Open semi-finals without dropping a set when he swept aside Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals. All good things must come to an end, however, and the Italian will fail to reach his first grand slam final when he loses to defending champion and world No.1 Novak Djokovic on the Rod Laver Arena.

The Serbian superstar is different gravy over five sets and is 13/4 with Betway to win 3-1 after beating Sinner in straight sets in the last eight at Wimbledon last summer.

• Blackpool, Bolton, Portsmouth and Stockport form Saturday’s Football League yankee.
