On Monday, it was revealed that Horner was being investigated after a female Red Bull employee had accused him of inappropriate and controlling’ behaviour.
The F1 star ‘completely denies’ the claims, and in a hearing taking place today must present his case to the independent lawyer his team have hired to handle the case.
The employee is believed to have already presented her evidence, and Red Bull want the matter dealt with quickly so it does not overshadow their 2024 car launch next Thursday.
It is unlikely however that a decision on Horner’s future will be made straight away, with the evidence set to be examined over the weekend.
Horner has been Red Bull team principal since they were founded in 2005, transforming them into one of the most successful teams in the sport’s history.
However, The Guardian report that Horner’s supporters believe that this whole matter has something to do with the rumoured power struggle between the Red Bull higher-ups.
It was reported last year that Horner was attempting to oust long-serving team advisor Helmut Marko – himself a figure of great controversy – but rumours of a rift were played down.
Horner enjoyed a close relationship with Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz prior to his death in 2022, but with new managing director Oliver Mintzlaf now at the helm that same luxury does not exist.
Mintzlaf has even been touted as a potential replacement for Horner if he was to leave his role.
Some claim that this investigation, and Red Bull’s handling of it, is an attempt to ‘clip his [Horner’s] wings or remove him from the job altogether’.
The team’s only comment on the story was their statement on Monday: ‘After being made aware of certain recent allegations, the company launched an independent investigation.
‘This process, which is already underway, is being carried out by an external specialist barrister. The company takes these matters extremely seriously and the investigation will be completed as soon as practically possible.
‘It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.’
Regardless of the truth, Horner’s allies say he has been ‘shocked and disturbed’ by the whole ordeal.
Horner’s wife – former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell – is said to have been in ‘floods of tears’ but will stand by and support her husband to the end.
