Erik ten Hag should be ‘knighted’ if Man Utd pull off ‘miracle’ win, says Paul Merson | Football

Paul Merson has claimed that Erik ten Hag should be knighted if he can lead Manchester United to a ‘miracle’ FA Cup victory over rivals Manchester City later this month.

United slumped to their second successive league defeat with a 1-0 loss against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It marks their 19th defeat in all competitions this season and leaves their hopes of European qualification hanging by a thread.

United’s best hope of securing European football next season could come via the FA Cup, although Ten Hag’s side are up against an in-form City who are looking to wrap up their fourth successive league title.

The Red Devils lost out against Pep Guardiola’s side in last season’s final and Merson does not fancy their chances of avenging that defeat in just under a fortnight.

‘I mean, if they beat Man City in the FA Cup final, looking at the last few results, looking at Palace, he should get knighted,’ Merson said on Sky Sports.

‘He should get knighted. I’m not exaggerating. He should get knighted, because it would be a miracle. It would be a miracle if they beat Man City.’

United host Newcastle in midweek before heading to Brighton on final day as they look to avoid their worst-ever finish in the top flight in the Premier League era.

‘I didn’t think in my lifetime that I’d see this,’ Merson added when asked about United’s form this season.

‘There never has been a negative goal difference for Manchester United [at the end of a Premier League season] but even eighth.

‘I mean, eighth in the league… this is still like sitting here today, in my opinion, the biggest club in the world. You know, still one of the biggest clubs in the world.’
