Pep Guardiola has confirmed Erling Haaland is closing in on making his long-awaited Manchester City return.

The Norwegian goal machine has missed the last six weeks with a foot injury which ruled him out of his side’s victorious FIFA Club World Cup campaign.

Reports earlier this week claimed the 23-year-old had completed a full session during the final day of a recent warm-weather training camp but Friday’s FA Cup tie at Tottenham would come too soon.

Guardiola confirmed Haaland would play no part in tomorrow’s blockbuster tie in north London but that a return to action is imminent.

He said: ‘Tomorrow he is still not ready but he is close.’

The City manager also confirmed that John Stones will return to the squad having recovered from an ankle injury he picked up last month at Everton.

Goalkeeper Ederson, meanwhile, is also in line to feature after he was forced off in the recent win over Newcastle.

Stefan Ortega deputised for the Brazil international at St James’ Park, as he did in the cup competitions last season, but it remains to be seen whether the 31-year-old will keep his place given the quality of opposition City face in the shape of Ange Postecoglou’s resurgent side.
