Gary Neville has admitted he has regrets over telling some players to join Manchester United, adding that Jude Bellingham dodged a bullet by snubbing the club.

The United legend’s remarks came after the Red Devils drew 2-2 with Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result that moves the club up to seventh in the Premier League.

The home side took the lead twice through Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford, but were pegged back twice thanks to goals from Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Notably, new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance for the first time, with the British billionaire and his team set to take over the club’s sporting matters.

Fans will be hoping that United’s recruitment will be overhauled and greatly improved after a decade of poor signings and overspending under the Glazers rule.

But speaking after the game, Neville and fellow former United captain Roy Keane admitted that, right now, they wouldn’t advice players to move to Old Trafford given how so many high-profile names have struggled at the club.

‘I’ve said for years, if you have the chance to sign for Man United go for it. But my mind has changed, definitely over the last couple of years,’ Keane said on Sky Sports.

‘I’ve spoken to a couple of players before they’ve come here and said, “you’ll never regret it, it’s a magic football club”,’ Neville added.

‘But I have to say, looking back it looks like really poor advice by what’s happened to them since they’ve come. It’s really sad because they would have thrived at other clubs, and other players who chose other clubs have gone onto be really successful.’

Neville went onto highlight the example of Bellingham, who snubbed United to join Borussia Dortmund in January 2020, and has now gone on to become perhaps the best young player in the world, moving to Real Madrid last summer in a deal worth up to £115million.

‘You think of Jude Bellingham and I think of that a lot, when he walked into the boardroom here at Manchester United,’ the former defender added.

‘Manchester United agreed a fee with Birmingham and so have Dortmund, and he has a choice between Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United. And somehow that kid – well done to him – chose Borussia Dortmund.

‘And he’s now one of the greatest players in the world and one of the greatest English talents.

‘What would have happened to him if he had come here? I don’t know, maybe he would have been a success because he’s that good, but I’m not so sure in the current environment and culture with what’s been happening.’
