Glenn Hoddle names England duo who will miss Euro 2024 because of Kobbie Mainoo | Football

Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo’s place in the England squad is bad news for West Ham duo Kalvin Phillips and James Ward-Prowse.

That’s the opinion of former Three Lions manager Glenn Hoddle who reckons the midfield duo now have little chance of going to Euro 2024.

While Jarrod Bowen has a good chance of representing the Irons in Gareth Southgate’s squad the same cannot be said for their other English stars.

Despite his impressive form, Ward-Prowse hasn’t been capped since June 2022, while Phillips has lost his place in the squad with his loan spell at West Ham from Manchester City going disasterously.

The 28-year-old has been error-prone since arriving at the London Stadium, and after giving away a penalty in the 4-3 loss to Newcastle last Saturday, he was filmed giving the middle finger to a West Ham fan.

‘It’s not just at the weekend, there’s a few things that have happened. He gave a goal away [on his debut] here a few weeks back,’ Hoddle said on TNT Sports in regards to Phillips’ form.

‘So he’s on a downer, but you need support. There’s no doubt he’s a good footballer, he really is. When you’re out for that length of time at the top level, you’re not going to switch it on like a light. It’s going to need a little bit more time.

West Ham and England star James Ward-Prowse

‘Ward-Prowse has been an excellent player, a fantastic player and those two players, it looks like they’re gonna miss out. Perhaps, it’s Mainoo that might actually go instead of Ward-Prowse to the Euros.’

The rise of wonderkid Mainoo means Southgate’s job of picking his 23-man squad for the finals in Germany is a lot tougher, though most fans would be glad to see the 18-year-old selected ahead of Phillips.

‘There’s no doubt Kalvin Phillips is a top player, but probably for both of them they’ve left it too late,’ former England and West Ham star Joe Cole added.

‘It’s gonna be very difficult. Ward-Prowse has been in good form this year, he’s been fantastic.

Kalvin Phillips, I really feel for the lad because it just hasn’t worked for him. But he’s a top player, he will get back to that level.

‘It’s important these fans stick with him by the way because we all have players who have been in difficult rhythms and things are not working for you, and you need the support of your teammates, your manager and the fans.

‘He’s just got to find himself in a West Ham shirt. Maybe a goal or a crunching tackle when he comes on, just get the fans right back behind his side. He’s a top player. I’ve no doubt it will work for him in this club.’
