Rasmus Hojlund is expected to miss Manchester United’s next five games after being ruled out with a muscle injury.

The Denmark international has been in sensational form since scoring a last-gasp winner against Aston Villa on 27 December, scoring in every game he has been involved in to take his tally for the season to 13 goals.

His form has reignited United’s hopes of Champions League qualification this season but they were dealt a major blow on Friday after it was revealed their striker is set for a spell on the sidelines with a muscle injury.

United said in a statement the injury will see Hojlund ruled out ‘for two to three weeks’, a timeline that will rule him out until after March’s international break.

It would see Hojlund miss five games in total, starting with the visit of Fulham on Saturday afternoon with youngster Omari Forson in line to take his place in the side.

The Dane will also miss Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round clash away to Nottingham Forest and next Sunday’s derby against Manchester City at the Etihad.

United are then in action at home to Everton (9 March) and Sheffield United (16 March) before the final international break of the season.

Should his recovery go to plan, Hojlund could return to action on 30 March away to Brentford.

Hojlund is United’s top scorer this season. Scott McTominay (eight), Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes (both seven) have also contributed with ten Hag now looking for that trio to step up in the Dane’s absence.

The games Rasmus Hojlund will miss through injury

Fulham (h), Premier League – 24 February
Nottingham Forest (a), FA Cup – 28 February
Manchester City (a), Premier League – 3 March
Everton (h), Premier League – 9 March
Sheffield United (h), Premier League – 16 March

‘Garnacho is scoring a lot of goals – seven,’ Ten Hag said. ‘Rashy [Rashford] is capable, but he scores [only] five [so far].

‘In our last games, the frontline is an absolute threat, they score [so] is it Rasmus Højlund only?

‘No, it’s Garnacho, also Rashford, Scott McTominay. Bruno can score. What gives me the confidence is that in autumn the frontline wasn’t scoring, they were not even a threat.

‘At this moment they are in very good form and a threat continually.

‘[Hojlund] has lately been very important. But the main man? I don’t see it that way.’
