Jamie Carragher was left stunned by Mauricio Pochettino’s furious reaction to his squabbling Chelsea players during Monday’s win over Everton.

The Blues cruised to a 6-0 win over the Toffees at Stamford Bridge with Cole Palmer scoring four times but the night was overshadowed somewhat by a penalty incident in the second-half.

After Palmer had won the penalty, Nicolas Jackson initially took the ball with the intention of taking the spot kick with Noni Madueke then trying to take the ball off the striker.

The two argued before skipper Conor Gallagher intervened, handing the ball to regular penalty taker Palmer who duly slotted home.

‘It’s a shame, it’s a shame. It’s a shame because we cannot behave in this way.,’ Pochettino said of the incident.

‘I told them it’s the last time I accept this type of behaviour. If we want to be a team and win things we need to think in the collective way.

‘I made that clear to them. Cole Palmer is our taker, if he wants to give the penalty to someone else he can but not in this way. It is a sad situation and I don’t want it to happen again.’

Former Liverpool defender Carragher later admitted he was surprised by Pochettino’s decision not to try and keep the incident and its fallout behind closed doors.

While pleased to see the Blues boss so direct in discussing it, Carragher believes it demonstrated just how ‘angry’ the Argentine was with his young players.

‘I think his reaction is really interesting, I wasn’t expecting that,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

‘When we saw the players get into it they tried to downplay the situation.

‘I thought it might have been the case of, everyone is in the dressing room and the manager gives the players the message, when you go out, this is what we are saying, we have had a great win, let’s not let this overshadow it. And I don’t think it should.

‘But it was really interesting at how upset he was and how angry he is over that situation. He’s looking at it thinking, “this has been the best night for us as a team and now everyone is going to talk about this.”

‘So I was surprised by that reaction but also pleased as he’s sending a strong message to the players and it won’t happen again.
