Jorginho’s agent has again refused to rule out the possibility of the Arsenal midfielder returning to Italy with talks over a new contract shelved until the end of the season.

The experienced Italy international joined the Gunners last January from Chelsea and initially looked set to play a bit-part role for Mikel Arteta.

A long-term injury to Thomas Partey, allied to a slight change in role for Martin Odegaard, has seen the 32-year-old play an increasingly prominent part in Arsenal’s rise to the Premier League summit.

Jorginho’s current deal is, however, set to expire in the summer and he is unlikely to be short of suitors given his form over the course of the past two months.

‘The squad is Arsenal’s strength,’ Joao Santos told TMW. ‘Today they’re a squad that lead the Premier League, they’re in a position of absolute importance.

‘They’re in the Champions League, they face Bayern and there’ll be a lot of emotion until the end of this season.

‘He’s out of contract with the Gunners, we’ll talk to them because he’s doing well. If they need him from next season.’

Asked about a potential return to Serie A, he added: ‘It’s always like this in football. Jorginho has played in Italy all his life, he likes it a lot, why say no?’

Jorginho’s form for Arsenal has played a role in helping the Euro 2020 winner regain his play in the Italy squad ahead of this summer’s European Championships where he hopes to play a key part in the Azzurri’s trophy defence.

‘I was at the stadium, I watched him live,’ said Santos after he attended Italy’s win over Ecuador.

‘Italy are on the right path now, they won two important friendlies in the United States against South American national teams such as Venezuela and Ecuador.

‘Now focus on the European Championship.

‘Jorginho lifted the trophy at Wembley, it’s right to think about the positive aspects of his career, not just the negative times.

‘It’s football, that’s how it works, I hope he lifts the trophy in Germany too with the Italy shirt.’
