Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff have left Roma with immediate effect, the Serie A club has confirmed.

The former Chelsea and manchester United manager has been in charge in the Italian capital since May 2021, winning the Europa Conference League in 2022.

However, with the club ninth in Serie A with eight wins from 20 league matches, they have parted ways with the manager and his staff.

Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said: ‘We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said .

‘We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

‘We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.’

Mourinho’s last match in charge has proved to be a 3-1 defeat at AC Milan on Sunday, which came after a 1-0 loss in a Coppa Italia Rome derby to Lazio four days earlier.

However, the Portuguese could only watch that loss to Milan from the stands after being shown a red card in a recent 1-1 draw with Atalanta.

Speaking earlier this month, Mourinho felt the need to defend his professionalism after the loss to Lazio.

‘I’ve been here for two years and five months and I’m the only person here who hasn’t missed a single training session in that time,’ Mourinho said. ‘For me there are no illnesses or bad moods. For two and a half years I haven’t done anything wrong, not even a couple of weeks ago when everyone was sick.

‘A few months ago, I needed a day for a situation that I don’t have to explain. I told the manager Pinto and the ownership and we decided that the day after the derby would be a good day. I was away from Rome for 15 hours. It seems ridiculous to me to justify this.

‘I do not accept in any way that my professionalism and dignity, my heart for this job, can be questioned. If there is a perfect example of professionalism, it is me. I have never missed one match in over 20 years of my career.’
