Jurgen Klopp dramatically announced he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing an end to his trophy-laden nine-year reign at Anfield.

News of the manager’s departure came as a huge shock to the Merseyside club on Friday morning given the success Liverpool have enjoyed this season.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen is confident fellow Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso will be contemplating replacing the 56-year-old German. Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi meanwhile is also among the list of possible candidates but played down immediate links with the Anfield job.

At a press conference on Friday, Klopp announced he will have no role to play in appointing his successor with the Liverpool board offering no timescale for that process.

The Reds, who advanced the Carabao Cup final in midweek, remain in contention to win four trophies and currently sit top of the Premier League following last Sunday’s resounding 4-0 win at Bournemouth.
