Jurgen Klopp has warned his injury-ravaged squad that anything less than a ‘proper Liverpool performance’ will prove costly against Luton Town at Anfield tomorrow night.

The Premier League leaders will be without Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones as well as, more than likely, Darwin Nunez, following Saturday’s win at Brentford which came at a cost.

Alisson Becker, meanwhile, is unlikely to return from a hamstring strain and the Brazil international is facing a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

Despite an ever-growing injury list, the Reds will fancy their chances of solidifying their place at the top of the table, though Klopp is taking nothing for granted.

The Liverpool boss revealed he has been mightily impressed with the way Luton have equipped themselves under Rob Edwards during their first campaign in the top flight since 1992.

Edwards’ side held Liverpool to a draw at Kenilworth Road back in December and were unlucky not to take two points off Manchester United last weekend, despite falling 2-0 behind inside seven minutes.

Central to their improvement has been the form of two midfielders who have struggled at the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal in recent years, Ross Barkley and Albert Sambi Lokonga.

After several seasons in the wilderness, Barkley has thrived under Edwards’ tutelage, while Lokonga, who joined on loan from the Gunners, is finally showing the talent that persuaded Arsenal to sign him for £17million from Anderlecht in the summer of 2021.

‘Ross Barkley is one of these nice stories if you want who is back to his best or better, plays a deeper role, super disciplined, on the ball is extremely strong,’ said Klopp at his pre-match press conference.

‘Lokonga when you see him playing and you think he’s an Arsenal player and they loaned him… interesting!’

On the threat Luton pose, Klopp added: ‘Really, really strong. They are experienced and they are really together.

‘I think the situation at Bournemouth a few weeks or month ago with the captain is something that brought them even closer together and showed them there are worse things in life than getting maybe relegated and so they fight for the chance.

‘That’s how they show up and I respect them a lot. Not just because of our situation we will see how our line-up will look but in general they deserve respect.

‘We have to show that with a proper Liverpool performance and I mean everybody who enters the gate has to be on their toes tomorrow night because they are really good.’
