Phil Foden is known as ‘The Sniper’ in the Manchester City squad, says Kyle Walker, after the England star scored two more brilliant goals in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United.

The Premier League champions found themselves behind at the Etihad after a stunning Marcus Rashford goal after just eight minutes.

Foden levelled things up 56 minutes into the contest with a brilliant left-footed strike, cutting in from the right and then he put his side ahead 24 minutes later from the inside-left channel, before Erling Haaland completed the scoring late on.

It was another fantastic performance from the 23-year-old and Walker was thoroughly impressed with ‘The Sniper’ as he shone again.

‘I think this season he’s been nothing short of first class,’ Walker told Sky Sports. ‘That’s the standard he sets for himself, that’s the standard that we set for him, the manager and the standard that he needs to keep up now.

‘We know when he comes in on his left foot…we call him The Sniper because he likes to shoot. When he comes in on that left foot you know he’s got the quialit, calmness and composure to pick his spot and I thought he took his goal fantastically well.

‘The second, probably coming off the left hadn’t side, you don’t really see Phil in that position, but for him to find the corner, that just shows his flexibility, where he can be in both sides and he’s been trusted down the middle as well. Which I think is a big part of the responsibility he’s took on for the team. We need important players like him because they win you games.’

Foden confirmed that the nickname is the reason for his gun-slinging goal celebration and Walker revealed that his teammate has long been firing in shots in training.

‘He’s been shooting since I turned up in 2017! He loves a shot,’ said the full-back. ‘But he practices, he puts in the work, he’s always doing extra shooting. His goals are coming and he’s reaping the rewards.’
