Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez hopes to make his long-awaited return from injury in the side’s Premier League clash against Tottenham this weekend.

The Argentine has been out since October following the club’s decision to put the defender under the knife for a second time to cure a metatarsal problem.

Martinez spent three months on the sidelines at the end of last season but he was unhappy with his recovery upon his return in August and it was decided that the issue should be looked at again.

United have sorely missed Martinez, particularly given the injury problems of Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

The former Ajax ace returned to training last week and the Daily Mail say he’s targeting Sunday’s clash against Spurs for his return.

United are eight points adrift of Ange Postecoglou’s side and need to beat Spurs to revive their top four hopes.

Erik ten Hag hopes to have the likes of Luke Shaw, Maguire, Amad Diallo, Antony and Christian Eriksen back for the clash after they all missed Monday’s win against Wigan.

Casemiro and Mason Mount are likely to need longer back on the training pitch before making their return.
