Liverpoool legend Jamie Carragher admits it’s ‘bad news’ for Liverpool that Bayern Munich are interested in hiring Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool have made Alonso their first choice target to replace Jurgen Klopp following the German’s decision to step down at the end of the season.

Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are eight points clear of Bayern in the Bundesliga and look set to end Bayern’s 11-year winning run.

Ironically, it’s the form of Leverkusen that could see Alonso reject a move to Anfield as Bayern are now interested in his signature.

Thomas Tuchel confirmed in a joint-statement with the club on Tuesday that he will step down at the end of the season.

Bayern are now expected to target Alonso and the Germans rarely miss out on a top target.

Carragher admits Bayern’s interest is bad news but he remains hopeful that Alonso will pick Liverpool,

Asked if it’s a negative that Bayern are interested, Carragher told CBS Sports: ‘Yes if there’s other people in for him of course, in for his signature.

‘It’ll be interesting. Listen, who knows if he’s going to leave Leverkusen. But I feel if he goes on to do what we think and he wins the title there then it’ll be difficult to stay because he’ll have some great offers.

‘Fingers crossed it’s my Liverpool, and I can make a case for that. I just think he’s got his focus on Leverkusen at the moment.’

The likes of Ange Postecoglou and Roberto De Zerbi are in contention to replace Klopp.

Postecoglou, a Liverpool fan, is in his debut season as Spurs boss and has a contract until 2026, while De Zerbi has admitted he plans on returning to Italy.
