Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Levi Colwill’s situation as Chelsea prepare to sell academy players in order to balance the books in the summer transfer window.

Colwill, 20, returned from an impressive loan spell at Brighton last summer and has since established himself as a regular in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team, making 29 appearances in all competitions this term.

Last August, Colwill, who joined Chelsea at the age of eight, put pen to paper on a six-year contract, tying the versatile defender to Stamford Bridge until 2029.

But Chelsea are under pressure to adhere to Premier League profit and sustainability rules and the likes of Conor Gallagher, Ian Maatsen, Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, and now Colwill, have all been linked with moves away from west London.

Cashing in on academy products could be deemed ‘pure profit’ from Chelsea’s perspective and a potential deal for Colwill has put both Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain on alert, according to The Evening Standard.

However, the report indicates Chelsea will not entertain offers for Colwill, who made his senior international debut in England’s friendly with Australia back in October.

It’s claimed the Blues fended off a number of attempts from Brighton to sign Colwill on a permanent basis last summer after his outstanding performances at the back under the tutelage of Roberto De Zerbi.

Colwill had been an injury doubt heading into Chelsea’s clash with Manchester City, but the young England international impressed as Pep Guardiola’s champions dropped points at the Etihad.

Speaking to Gambling Zone this week, William Gallas suggested Colwill had all the attributes to take over the reins from Thiago Silva and be the leader of Chelsea’s defence for years to come.

‘I think that Levi Colwill can be the heir to Thiago Silva and become the boss of Chelsea’s defence in the future,’ the ex-Chelsea and France defender said.

‘But he will need to play alongside one experienced defender to help him fulfil his potential.

‘It looks like this will be Thiago Silva’s last season with the club, so when he goes, for Colwill to fulfil his potential, he will need to play alongside an experienced, world-class defender.

‘He has played alongside Thiago Silva this season, albeit from left back. When Thiago plays, he takes all of the pressure and deals with it. He runs the show.

‘There is still time for Colwill to learn from Thiago this season, but next season, if he is going to fulfil his potential, then Chelsea will need to bring in a world-class defender to play alongside him.’
