Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed who he wants to win the Premier League title six-pointer between Manchester City and Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon knowing victory would send them four points clear of title rivals Man City.

Arsenal will take confidence from a 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s side earlier in the season but were thumped 4-1 in this fixture last term.

Liverpool, sitting level on points with Arsenal, play host to Brighton a few hours before the Etihad showdown and will be keeping a close eye on the scenes in Manchester as they bid to win the Premier League in Jurgen Klopp’s last season at Anfield.

Carragher says an Arsenal win would be preferable for Liverpool than if Manchester City triumphed but reckons the Gunners can almost be ruled out of the title race if they are beaten at the Etihad.

In a fan debate on The Overlap, Manchester United hero Gary Neville said: ‘Surely you want Arsenal to win on Sunday, from Liverpool’s perspective?’

Ex-Liverpool captain Carragher responded: ‘Yes, but I think even if Man City lose that game on Sunday, they can still win the league. They can still win the league if they lose.

‘I think if Arsenal get beat, I don’t see how they win the league. For Liverpool, surely you want City to lose but I actually think they could still win the league after that.

‘I don’t see Arsenal winning the league if they get beat. From Liverpool’s point of view then you’re only fighting against one team for the title.

‘I know points-wise it won’t make much of a difference but I just think psychologically it would really affect Arsenal if City jump above them, especially as you’d expect Liverpool to beat Brighton at home and then they’re above Arsenal too.

‘I think it would be tough for Arsenal to come back from that.’

Neville agrees that a Manchester City win would substantially dent Arsenal – and Liverpool’s – hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy come May 19.

‘If Man City win on Sunday, I’m not saying it’s game over but it would be very difficult for Arsenal and Liverpool,’ he said. ‘Given City’s experience and the run they’re on, it would be very difficult.’

Manchester City are bidding to win their fourth Premier League title in a row and sixth since 2018. Guardiola’s side sealed a historic treble last season and could match that effort this term ahead of a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid and a FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea.

Arsenal last lifted the Premier League trophy in 2004 but led the title race for most of the 2022-23 campaign before falling away and finishing five points behind City.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are the only team to have broken City’s Premier League dominance in the last six seasons and are looking to send departing manager Klopp off in style.
