Manchester United hero Wes Brown is backing his former side to upset the odds by beating arch-rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup this weekend.

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Sunday as heavy favourites to sweep aside United and advance to the semi-finals of the Cup.

The Reds are chasing a ‘quadruple’ of trophies in Jurgen Klopp’s final season and should be full strength for this game, with the team set to be rotated for the second leg of their Europa League tie with Sparta Prague on Thursday.

The Red Devils meanwhile may have won seven of their last nine games, but performances are still far, far off what they were last season when they reached the FA Cup final.

While Erik ten Hag is set to be boosted by the return of in-form striker Rasmus Hojlund from injury, few expect United to win, even with home advantage.

But former defender Brown believes they have a chance to get one over their rivals, telling ‘I can’t say we’re going to lose – in my heart I’m still a proper Manchester United fan and I think they will turn up.

‘I think it will be tight and that both teams will score, so I’m going to say 2-1 to United at the end of the 90 minutes.

‘Everyone has to play well though. I say it every week – no silly mistakes, focus and prepare for a battle. The United players need to help each other out because you can bet Liverpool will be right up for it, but the main thing for them is when they get opportunities, they need to put the ball into the back of the net.’

The FA Cup is the last chance for United to lift silverware having been knocked out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup in embarrassing fashion while they are currently sixth in the Premier League, a whopping 17 points of Arsenal and Liverpool at the top.

Victory would go a long way for Ten Hag who must convince new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe that he is the right man for the job, and Brown believes the manager should and will get another season to prove his worth.

‘I think the new owners will keep faith with Erik ten Hag,’ he added.

‘Obviously it’s very hard when new people come in because they’re going to have their own views on how the football club is run, but I can tell you from being around the club a little bit that the owners have been very positive.

‘I do feel like there will be some changes, particularly with some of the players, but I also think that they will give the manager time.

‘It’s a tough one – Manchester United have had some legendary managers over the past 11 years and are yet to really get back to where they want to be, but I’d like to see Erik ten Hag stay and try and build a team – his team. He deserves it after the season he had last year.’
