Manchester United duo Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro have returned to full training ahead of the FA Cup third round clash against Wigan Athletic.

The South American duo were two of United’s most important players last season as Erik ten Hag’s side finished in third place and won the Carabao Cup.

Their seasons have been interrupted by injury however with Martinez ruled out for the last three months.

The centre-half suffered a season-ending foot injury last season in April after breaking his metatarsal in a Europa League clash against Sevilla.

After undergoing surgery, he was back in the squad for pre-season but aggravated the injury again in September, undergoing a second operation.

In all, the Argentina international has started just six matches this season with ten Hag forced to name 10 different centre-half combinations this term amid a number of injury problems across his backline.

Martinez returned to full training this week alongside Casemiro, has been sidelined since November. The Brazil international picked up a knock during the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford with his future at Old Trafford coming under scrutiny.

Ten Hag told reporters last week Martinez and Casemiro will likely return this month. United play just two games in January owing to the brief mid-season break.

United travel to Wigan next Monday in their third round clash before hosting Tottenham in Premier League action on 14 January.

Ten Hag has also been without Harry Maguire and Mason Mount with Tyrell Malacia still to feature this term after a knee injury suffered at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

The trio are also on course to return this month.

Ten Hag told a press conference last week: ‘Mid-January we expect many players back. Mason [Mount], Casemiro, [Lisandro] Martinez, [Tyrell] Malacia.

‘We expect Harry Maguire, of course. We expect many players to return in January.’
