Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has teased a possible return from injury for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Everton at Old Trafford.

Hojlund picked up a muscle strain two weeks ago which has forced him to miss United’s last three games – which included top-flight defeats to Fulham and Manchester City as well as the fifth-round FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

The Denmark international’s omission has been a huge blow for the Red Devils given that he was in fantastic form before suffering the setback, producing seven goals and two assists in his last six Premier League appearances.

But the 21-year-old could be set to return against Everton in some capacity this weekend, even if he is only named on the bench against Sean Dyche’s side.

Hojlund was stopped in his car outside Carrington by fans on Thursday and was asked if he was back in full training and if he would feature against Everton.

While he confirmed that he was ‘not yet’ back in training and went to Carrington for ‘commercial stuff’, he shared a cryptic answer over facing Everton – simply responding ‘we’ll see’ – which has sparked hope that he is set to make a return.

Erik ten Hag’s side are in desperate need of three points against the Toffees to keep their slim chances of securing a top-four finish alive.

United currently sit sixth in the table – 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa – as they look to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Ten Hag was quizzed about United’s top-four hopes after their Manchester derby defeat and said: ‘We go to another final [against Everton next Saturday] and try to get closer.

‘We have to go for it. We have to win our games. Fifth position can also be a position for Champions League so we have to fight for it.’
