Manchester United star Antony was fuming with manager Erik ten Hag towards the end of the side’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal after being asked to play at left-back for the final stages of the match.

The Red Devils’ hopes of securing European football were dealt a big blow on Sunday at Old Trafford, with the narrow loss leaving them in eighth place – three points adrift of Europa Conference League qualification.

Ten Hag was once again without a host of players for the match, particularly in defence, and Casemiro, deputising at centre-back, was caught out in the 20th minute to gift Arsenal what proved to be the winning goal.

The veteran Brazilian was slow to step up as United tried to play out from the back and was 10 yards behind the rest of the back-line, leaving a completely unmarked Kai Havertz onside to collect the ball, drive to the byline and square for Leandro Trossard.

United’s makeshift defence became even more unorthodox as the side pushed for a late equaliser, with youngster Willy Kambwala partnering Casemiro for the final stages and Antony moved to left-back.

The former Ajax winger was not happy with the change, however, and was caught throwing a strop when Ten Hag asked him to switch positions.

It was the 87th minute and the Dutch coach had decided to make an adventurous triple substitution, with Sofyan Amrabat replaced by Christian Eriksen, Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced by Omari Forson and Ethan Wheatley introduced for Rasmus Hojlund.

With Wan-Bissaka off the pitch and an extra attacker on, Ten Hag switched Diogo Dalot back to his usual right-back role and asked Antony to leave the right flank and move to left-back, with Forson on the right wing.

Fan footage from the stands shows Ten Hag calling out to Antony – who had only been introduced off the bench 15 minutes earlier – and asking him to move to left-back.

The Brazilian was not too happy about the switch, however, and had to be walked over to his new spot on the pitch by Scott McTominay, with both the Scot and Eriksen speaking to Antony and trying to calm him down and cajole him.

Antony was still livid, though, pointing at his head in disbelief at the tactical switch and continuing to vent in the direction of McTominay, who gave his team-mate one more gee-up before the match resumed.

It is not the first time Antony has thrown a strop after being asked to play at left-back, with the same thing happening in United’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool.

During the half-time break of extra-time, the 24-year-old could be seen kicking off, even making a ‘mind blown’ gesture before the rest of his team-mates calmed him down.

Asked about playing left-back afterwards, Antony told TNT Sports Brasil: ‘Sacrifice, sacrifice, when the coach said that, I found it a bit strange, but sacrificing for the group, sacrificing for the team, that’s fine with me.’

The £85million signing has endured a difficult campaign, registering just one goal and one assist in 29 Premier League appearances.
