Manchester United will look to avoid three consecutive Premier League defeats and keep their hopes of European football alive when they host Newcastle on Wednesday.

United slumped to a 1-0 loss against Arsenal on Sunday but Erik ten Hag’s injury-ridden squad face a quick turnaround for their final home game of the season.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes missed his second consecutive game with injury, despite returning to first-team training in midweek, but could come back into the squad in midweek.

Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, could also be in the frame to feature, with Ten Hag revealing on Friday that he turned down the Argentine’s pleas to play against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Amad Diallo is also a doubt after he picked up a knock which forced him to be substituted midway through Sunday’s clash.

Two players not expected to feature in midweek are Mason Mount and Luke Shaw who both suffered injury setbacks in training last week.

The English duo are joined by the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane on the sidelines, leaving Ten Hag facing the prospect of another makeshift defence.

Newcastle, meanwhile, continue to deal with a shortage of fit centre-backs, with Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman all expected to miss out.

Kieran Tripper came on as a late substitute for his first minutes since March and could come back into the side on Wednesday, while Joelinton and Miguel Almiron are also pushing for their first starts since lengthy layoffs.

Up front, Callum Wilson will hope to recover from the slight niggle and illness that saw him miss the weekend draw with Brighton, while manager Eddie Howe downplayed long-term fitness concerns for star striker Alexander Isak after he was withdrawn early on Saturday.
