There was an awkward moment shortly after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool as Mauricio Pochettino appeared to give Todd Boehly the cold shoulder while collecting his runners-up medal.

The 64th League Cup final looked destined for a penalty shootout but Virgil van Dijk had other ideas, nodding home Konstantinos Tsimikas’ 118th-minute corner to send Liverpool’s support into raptures at Wembley.

The encounter was packed with moments of drama and controversy from start to finish, with Raheem Sterling and Van Dijk both having goals chalked off by VAR in normal time.

Cody Gakpo and Conor Gallagher also struck the woodwork before the match reached extra-time, as the two managers went through all the emotions on the touchline.

A visibly distraught Pochettino appeared close to tears at the full-time whistle and the Argentine still had to do the dreaded walk to receive his runners-up medal after he was denied his first ever trophy in English football.

As he made his way along the long line of officials and dignitaries, Pochettino completely ignored a red-faced Boehly, Chelsea’s owner and chairman, who appeared to be left hanging.

Reflecting on the match while commentating for Sky Sports, former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville branded Pochettino’s players ‘billion pound bottle jobs’.

Since Boehly’s takeover at Stamford Bridge in 2022, the Blues have spent in excess of £1billion on new recruits but are yet to win any silverware and find themselves languishing down in seventh place in the Premier League this term.

‘In extra time it’s been Klopp’s kids against the blue, billion pound bottle jobs,’ Neville said.

‘Liverpool absolutely sensational, those young players incredible, he must be so proud. But for Chelsea I’ve got no sympathy whatsoever.

‘I cannot believe Chelsea in extra-time, what has happened to them? From the very first minute of extra time they haven’t played, they haven’t turned up.

‘He [Pochettino] must be absolutely gutted.’
