Mikel Arteta has been accused of making an offensive reference to the late mother of Porto head coach Sergio Conceicao during Arsenal’s Champions League win on Tuesday evening.

Arsenal secured a place in the Champions League quarter final by beating Porto on penalties, with David Raya saving two spot-kicks during a tense shootout.

During Arsenal’s celebrations, Conceicao confronted Arteta on the pitch and in his post-match press conference, Porto’s head coach alleged that the Arsenal manager had insulted a member of his family on the touchline.

According to MailOnline, a source close to Conceicao has alleged that Arteta used the phrase ‘concha de tu madre’, an offensive insult in Spanish which means, ‘your mother’s vagina’.

The report adds that Arteta’s insult ‘was clearly heard’ by Conceicao’s coaching staff and Porto’s substitutes.

Conceicao’s mother died while he was a teenager, while he also lost his father in a motorcycle accident two years earlier at the age of 16 and on the day after he signed his first professional contract with Porto.

Arsenal, meanwhile, strongly deny Conceicao’s allegation towards Arteta.

In his press conference after Porto’s Champions League exit, Conceicao said of his run-in with Arteta: ‘During the game he turned to the bench and in Spanish, it must be a Spanish coach thing because it was the same thing with [Pep] Guardiola, he insulted my family.

‘In the end I told him to pay attention because the person he insulted is no longer with us, and I told him to worry about coaching his team, because due to individual quality he has an obligation to do more and better.’

When asked for his version of events after the game, Arteta said, ‘no comment’.
