Porto could be without Mehdi Taremi when they take on Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the club confirming he is struggling with an injury to the abductor in his right thigh.

The 31-year-old has been a huge hit at Porto since joining in 2020 from Rio Ave, scoring 86 goals in 172 appearances in all competitions.

The Iran international has not had a great season so far, scoring just three goals in the top flight in Portugal and three more in other competitions.

He has actually not scored a goal for Porto since 23 December, but has been away on international duty with Iran in the Asian Cup.

He has featured in Porto’s last two games and will hope to play against Arsenal on Wednesday, but the club confirmed he suffered the muscle injury in training on Sunday and is undergoing treatment.

Gonçalo Ribeiro, Marcano, Zaidu are all also undergoing treatment ahead of the meeting with the Premier League side.

Taremi is into the last six months of his contract and is expected to leave for Inter Milan at the end of the season.

Manager Sergio Conceicao, who played for Inter Milan himself, said: ‘Porto pays him and pays him well. But you have respect Mehdi, because he has always had respect for the club and he is a professional through and through.

‘I respect his desire. I feel it because I am here every day with the players. There were some players who left and worked magnificently until the last day of their contract.

‘They were great professionals. And now we are faced with a player whose contract is expiring and who is a great professional as well.’
