Jamal Musiala is a future Ballon d’Or winner, Rio Ferdinand has declared, backing the Bayern Munich star be at the top for the next decade.

Musiala is widely regarded as one of the best young players in the game right now, and even finished runner-up for the Kopa Trophy, given to the world’s best under-21 star, in 2023 – losing to Jude Bellingham.

The attacking midfielder spent eight years in Chelsea’s academy before signing for Bayern when he was 16, and is now tipped to play a pivotal role for his club and country for the rest of his career.

Ferdinand is greatly impressed with the Germany international, who represented England at youth level, saying on TNT Sports: ‘I love Musiala. We talk about him a lot. I don’t know where his ceiling is.

‘It’s nice to see the comments from his teammates saying how diligent he is and how much of a professional he is. [Leon] Goretzka says he might be the best talent Germany have ever had.

‘The way he moves and glides with the ball. I see a Ballon d’Or at some point in his career if he fulfils that potential.

‘He doesn’t seem like the type that’s going to get too high when he’s winning or too low when it’s not going well. He seems like a very balanced, measured kid with the right people around him.

‘That goes a long way and means there’s a real good possibility of him staying at the top for a sustained period. It’s the ones who get too high when it’s going well, who lose themselves and fall off a cliff after two or three years at the top.

‘This kid will be at the top for the next 10-12 years.’

Despite his tender years, Musiala has already won four Bundesliga titles and the Club World Cup, scoring 38 goals and making 26 assists in 149 appearances so far.

Former Bayern star Owen Hargreaves was equally full of praise for the 20-year-old, adding: ‘Alongside Vinicius Junior he probably is [the best dribbler in the Champions League].

‘The hardest thing in football I ever found was to receive the ball in or around chaos but Jamal makes it look so easy. I’ve almost never seen him lose the ball, that’s so rare in a young player.

‘The big thing between the good players and the great ones is the decision making. Phil Foden makes amazing decisions. Jamal Musiala makes amazing decisions when he gets into these [forward] positions.

‘I’m with Rio, I think he could be as good as anybody in the world of football. And I think he’s in a great place surrounded by some experienced, world class players like [Thomas] Muller who will help him reach his potential.’
