Sadio Mane has joked about his secret wedding after marrying 19-year-old Aisha Tamba in Senegal last weekend.

The 31-year-old, who currently plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia after leaving Bayern Munich last summer, has given little away about his private life during his playing career.

And the former Liverpool forward took many by surprise last Sunday as he posed for photographs at his wedding ceremony in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, just a week before the start of his side’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Little is known about Mane’s wife, Aisha, as she is not on social media and the newly-wed couple had never been publicly pictured together, but it’s understood that she was born in the same southwest region of Senegal as her husband.

Mane, meanwhile, has often been mocked on social media in his homeland about being single for several years but the two-time African Footballer of the Year issued a light-hearted quip to one well-wisher as he posed for photographs with supporters the day after his wedding.

After being congratulated, Mane said with a smile: ‘Thank you for the messages, except that all single people must now leave Senegal!’

Senegal’s president, Macky Sall, also joked about Mane’s new martial status during the national team’s traditional send-off before the start of their Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

‘First of all, I would like to warmly congratulate our national Nianthi, Sadio Mane, who has just got married… I called him up so that we could applaud him and wish him a happy marriage,’ Sall said.

‘May God bless your home and your descendants. From now on you have another job apart from scoring goals.’

Sall’s reference to Mane as ‘Nianthi’ is a name that means lion and warrior in southern Senegalese dialect.

Mane will now turn his focus to Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign which begins against Gambia on Monday.

The reigning AFCON champions will also play Cameroon and Gambia in Group C.
