Steven Gerrard is not set to follow Jordan Henderson out of Al Ettifaq any time soon, agreeing a new two-year contract extension with the Saudi side.

The Liverpool legend took over as manager in July and it has not been going particularly well, with six wins from 19 league games leaving the side sitting eighth in the Saudi Pro League.

Al Ettifaq are without a win in their last nine games, losing four and drawing five of them, leaving them 28 points behind league-leaders Al Hilal.

Henderson was one of Gerrard’s star signings over the summer but the England midfielder has quickly become disillusioned over the move and is on the verge of joining Ajax after agreeing to terminate his contract.

That does not appear to have changed Gerrard’s mind over the project, though, with The Athletic reporting that the 43-year-old has agreed a new two-year contract extension, which will keep him at the club until 2027.

Gerrard is hoping that Al Ettifaq will continue to recruit big names after Henderson’s departure, adding to the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Moussa Dembele, who he has in his squad.

‘We need to be aggressive, we need to be ruthless, and we need to make a lot of changes to make this team more competitive,’ Gerrard said last month.

‘We need to show in this window, and also the summer window, that we mean business and we want to be competitive at the top of the league, and not where we are at the moment.

‘It’s a collective thing – the players here and now need to give more, and people need to step up, and, at the right time, we will hopefully be able to make significant changes to the team and the squad.

‘Hopefully, at the back end of January, you will see a different, stronger and more competitive squad.’

The club announced on Wednesday the loan signings of Abdul Rahman Al-Aboud and Haroun Kamara from Al Ittihad.

Whether they will make the difference Gerrard is hoping for is yet to be seen.
