Ed Sheeran toasted Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League from Miami after his hometown club secured their place in the English top flight on Saturday.

The Tractor Boys eased to a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town to secure automatic promotion from the Championship, returning to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.

It marks a phenomenal achievement from the club who were languishing midtable in League 1 when manager Kieran McKenna arrived in December 2021.

The former Manchester United coach has guided them to back-to-back promotions becoming only the fifth side in English football history to achieve that feat.

Sheeran is currently in Miami where he is performing at this weekend’s Grand Prix but was watching the action with his entourage at 7am local time.

Having been in frequent contract with the team during the build-up to Saturday’s match, Sheeran video-called into the celebrations inside the Ipswich dressing room at Portman Road, plotting a night out with members of the squad next week to keep the party going.

‘I wish I was there,’ Sheeran said as the players chanted ‘we are going up’, adding he will be in touch to organise more celebrations in the coming days.

While a monumental achievement for the football club, Sheeran also hopes Ipswich’s return to the big-time will provide a huge boost to the whole area.

‘Just outside of Ipswich, I’ve seen it go through really difficult times, and I know that being in the Premier League is going to bring, not just real excitement to the football club but also real excitement and joy to the town and lift it up, which is really important,’ Sheeran told ESPN.

‘What’s brilliant about football is it is very unpredictable and you never know what’s going to happen.

‘We’ve been the top six teams in England fall from grace before, and you’ve seen people like Leicester win the league.

‘You never know, if we avoid relegation next season, that’s the biggest success for me, but you never know what’s going to happen.’

Sheeran has also been Ipswich’s principal shirt sponsor since 2021.
