Martinelli was surprisingly named on the bench last Saturday as Arsenal hosted Crystal Palace, only coming on with 20 minutes to go, by which time the game was already won.
The forward, who has struggled to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season, made the most of the opportunity: scoring two identical goals in stoppage time to round off a much-needed 5-0 victory.
This performance will no doubt give Mikel Arteta a bit of a selection dilemma for next Tuesday when the Gunners travel to Nottingham Forest as they aim to close the gap to title rivals Liverpool.
For now, the Brazil star has been receiving the plaudits, not least from Redknapp who included the 22-year-old in his Premier League Team of the Week.
‘I know he didn’t start the game, but I can’t leave Gabriel Martinelli out. Two goals off the bench is always good going and it was two very composed finishes,’ the former Tottenham boss told BetVictor.
‘I don’t use these words lightly, but those two finishes were reminiscent of a certain Thierry Henry! I’ve always liked this guy’s energy and work-rate, but he needs to keep adding more goals to his game.’
Two other Arsenal players made Redknapp’s TOTW following their performances against Palace, namely David Raya and Gabriel Magalhaes.
He added: ‘My keeper this week is David Raya. This lad has had an up and down start to his Arsenal career, but he looked good against Crystal Palace.
‘They didn’t offer a lot, but he made a couple of good saves when called upon. Mikel Arteta would have loved how alert he was to start the counter-attack for Leandro Trossard’s goal though, that’s exactly why he was signed.
‘How can I leave Gabriel out? He’s always a threat at set pieces, he’s scored quite a few goals for Arsenal in the last couple of years.
‘His goal against Crystal Palace explains why, he times his leap so well and has so much desire to get his head on it. I think this lad goes under the radar and he’s formed a great partnership with William Saliba.’
